President Obama on the way to history. (Photo: MyFox.DC.com) THE SECOND TERM BEGINS
Today Barack Obama began his second term in earnest by giving a speech that was filled with straight forward talk. If you didn’t know, understand or figured out where Mr. Obama stood before, you do now. Obama endorsed gay rights and same sex marriage. He also said that work would be done on climate change and that there would be cuts in the baloooing deficit but not at the expense of programs that help the less disadvantaged or the middle class. Obama said, "We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit," Obama said. But "the commitments we make to each other — through Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security — these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great." The takers comment was a shot across the bow to the GOP and those still believing in that 47% that can just do okay on their own. I might be biased here but if you listen to the speech, you can hear and see elements of Lincoln, (compassion and inclusion) Teddy Roosevelt (action on the environment) Franklin Roosevelt (reshaping but still protecting the Social safety net) and Ronald Reagan (an unbridled optimism that things can and will be better). It was a heck of a speech and he knocked it out of the park. (Quote: USA Today).
