The other day as I sat in the Neurologist's office waiting to see him, I looked at a children’s set of a table and chairs. Mrs. LuLac remarked that the chairs looked so tiny. And then I said to her, if they locked the Democrats and the Republicans in a room together with that table and those little chairs, you’d see how quickly this thing would be settled.

In the fiscal cliff negotiations, President Obama should not pull a Jerry Mathers and “Leave It To The Beavers” in Congress. He did that during the health care debate and had a few things in the Affordable Care Act that were deemed problematic. He did that with the Stimulus bill and had a few things in there the GPOP hammered him on. The President needs to take control of what he wants. 2013 CONTROLLER’S RACE
Luzerne County will no longer have row offices for election. But a big race this year will be the Controller’s race. Incumbent Walter Griffith is running again and let’s hope the suicidal tendencies of the Luzerne County GOP are suppressed and keep them from running a challenge to Griffith in the primary. I know this sounds unrealistic but they ave done dumber things. On the Democratic side Bob Morgan swore up and down that he isn’t running but I’ve seen him and his lovely family at events across the county. Griffith has the support of many taxpayers fed up with the revelations of county spending like clothing allowances and free lunches for workers. His critics will say Walter is playing “smallball” but the outrage rings true. The general election race might tell us just how strong the Luzerne County Democratic party is………or isn’t.

The last living, remaining vestige of the Texas Democratic party that dominated the Lone Star state in the 50s and 60s has died. Jack Brooks passed away the other day and was one of the first Democrats from Congress to get squarely behind Civil Rights and served in Congress for 42 years. He has the distinction of being the most senior member of Congress to be defeated. He lost in 1994 for having supported the Clinton crime bill even though he was a former Marine and lifelong NRA member. Brooks was one of the richest men in Congress but was on the scene in events of political history. He drafted the articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon, was in the motorcade in Dallas when President Kennedy got killed and was on Air Force One when his friend Lyndon Johnson became President. He was 89.
DAVE BRUBECK
Jazz great Dave Brubeck died Wednesday. He was in his 90s. Those of us of a certain age remember when Brubeck was a mainstay on the late night talk shows in the early and mid 60s. Brubeck’s “Take 5” was the very first jazz record to sell one million copies. When I was in college I worked at the King’s station WRKC FM and did a weekly jazz show. I found a treasure trove of classic albums entitled “Jazz Goes To College” which featured Brubeck and his group. He was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1954 , played before world audiences including performances with Leonard Bernstein’s New York Philharmonic (that a great vintage album!) and performed before Pope John Paul II, President Reagan and other world leaders of note. Brubeck wanted to become a veterinarian but changed his major to music. We are all thankful for that. He would have been celebrating his 92nd birthday today.AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
