WRITE ON WEDNESDAY

Every week we accept articles, notes, scan over letters to the editor or pick commentary worthy of attention. Recently I came across a poem that is worth sharing. It is written by Nanticoke resident Rita Jarolin and is something you should take a look at.

Phoenix Rise
To a Universal Sign
Of Mythical Design

Phoenix rise
From your ashes again,-
So you can recreate
Your power from within.

Phoenix rise from your flames,-
Acquiring strong power
From your
Predecessor’s reign.

Live your own eternal life,-
By envisioning your desires
And your own dreams.

In 6th to 7th century times,-
‘The royal bird’ and ‘the purple one’,-
Were Isidore’s associations
So you, the ‘Phoenician’.
Your strong persuasion,-
Meant to become a bird
Of influential tradition.

In ancient Egyptian lore,
Called you ‘Bennu’ and ‘Heron’ via hieroglyphs,-
And your word-ly ‘weben’ design, -
Denoting you as a source of power,-
“To rise brilliantly” or “to shine”
With your constant renewal of time.

Persian-time presence,-
Significant essence,-
Called ‘Huma’ or ‘bird of paradise’;-
Your beauty is more than physical,-
Allowing you to evolve
To break all your limitations,-
Without having said pretense.

Greek-period elegance,-
’Bennu’ adaption renamed ‘phoinix’
Purple-red or crimson color;-
Compared to a peacock or an eagle,-
And your strength is like no other.
Greek sun god, Apollo in his chariot ,-
Listen to your worldly song.

During Oriental times,-
In China, you are ‘Feng-huang’,-
Symbolizing music, colors, nature,
Yin and yang- you are ‘absolute’.
You represent peace, fire, the sun,-
Justice, obedience and fidelity
Of world peace and prosperity- so astute.

During Christianity,-
You too, phoenix, resurrected from death
Blessed as brand new and pure,-
Serving as a historical metaphor,-
Within Medieval and Renaissance Christian literature,-
Entwining classical myth and folklore,-
For Mary’s virginity and Christ’s resurrection.

Symbolic of many religious
And naturalistic persuasions
Now of ancient and modern-day designs,-
You universally represent
Death and rebirth,-
And human aspirations
That resonate to all.

Phoenix fire,
Strong desire,
To re-create,
The pure love
You’ve made,
Times after times.
