Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. WHY IT WILL BE CLOSE
While Mitt Romney seems to be on the ropes this week (he had a stunning week that is something I have never seen since following politics) don’t count him out yet. The political pundits are all saying it will now be up to the debates to even give him a glimmer of a chance, but that might not be the case. When Presidential polls are taken, there are two models used, “Likely voters” and “Registered Voters”. The difference between the two is huge. A likely voter is someone who is leaning toward a candidate, meaning that they are inclined to support a candidate. A registered voter is someone on the rolls who may or may not vote. (A perfect example is a friend of mine that I worked with a few years back. She opined that she only votes in Presidential elections because they are the most important. She sits out all the rest even when the argument can be made that local contests are more important to her well being). Polls taken among registered voters have President Obama winning by more than 6 points in crucial swing states. But when likely voters are polled, Mutt Romney tends to get closer. The GOP might have a built in advantage in the likely voter category because their base is older and more inclined to vote. The Obama campaign registered many new voters in 2008. But will they stay registered or can they be turned into likely voters again in 2012? Because of this difference, the race is going to be closer than you might imagine. I’m shocked that Pennsylvania is not a swing state and that people actually believe the President is in double digits. That balloon is going to burst. When it comes down to it, despite Romney’s gaffes and even with the President’s personal popularity, you are going to see a tight race for President. It may not unreasonable to expect that Mitt money may very well win the popular vote but lose in The Electoral College. And when the story of the 2012 race is written, it may come down to the “registered” voter vs the “likely” voter.CONAHAN’S HAIL MARY
The Times Leader reports that Former Luzerne County judge Michael Conahan has filed court papers that seek to vacate his sentence should a federal appellate court reviewing his co-defendant’s case determine Judge Edwin Kosik should have recuse himself. In a six-page motion, Conahan, acting as his own attorney, said he believes he’s entitled to a new sentencing hearing before a new judge should the Third Circuit Court of Appeals agree with former judge Mark Ciavarella that Kosik should not have presided over the case I will be shocked if this goes anywhere. The Judicial scandals are receding into history and a ruling in both Judge’s favor would just bring it all up again. And trust me, appal or no appeal, no one wants that.
