President Obama and the Family.

GOOD PRESIDENT OR GOOD PARENT?

I saw an interview with Barack Obama tonight on CNN regarding his tenure as President. It was a pretty well balanced report and really outlined the accomplishments of Obama since taking office. I’m fairly certain I’ll be voting for the President this fall because of the following reasons:
1. His stimulus plan did work. It created or saved millions of jobs that would have went away without it.
2. That same bill made health care affordable for millions of people that were laid off in 2009. I was a recipient of that health care COBRA supplement. It helped.
3. In terms of job growth, it should be noted by someone that at the start of his term, we were losing jobs. I remember times under the Bush administration when no new jobs were created. Under this administration there are 29 months of consecutive job growth.
4. Even though it was not the Health Care Bill I wanted, (the Public Option) it was a historic landmark achievement that will help millions. And despite Republican protestations make the insurance industry bigger and richer.
5. The President took the unpopular step of bailing out the auto industry. Again, he saved millions of jobs.
6. His administration has undertaken a successful program via the Drone technology to kill our enemies who are affiliated with terrorists. The biggest target was Bin Laden. His opponents can bitch and argue that he never pulled the trigger but unlike former Presidents Clinton (yes the sainted Bill) and George Bush, Obama gave the order.
I will gladly go into reasons some other time why I shouldn’t vote for him but that’s for another time.
Getting back to my original statement, Mr. Obama told CNN that he is not a back slapper and wants to make sure he is home every night at 6:30PM having dinner with the family and going over school lessons with his daughters. His answer was in response to a question by the reporter that he might be too aloof with the Washington insiders. It is admirable that the President wants to be a good parent. But his first responsibility is to the American people. His first responsibility is to those parents who miss dinner with their own kids because they are forced to have seconds jobs to afford the food for the dinner in the first place. Great Presidents are rarely great fathers. Look to Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan for proof. Sometimes these moments of personal candor don’t cut it. What was the need for Obama to try and impress the reporter with the fact that he was a good parent and wanted to spend time with the kids? This falls into the category of “what was he thinking?’ Maybe I’m overreacting but you can bet the GOP right is going to have a field day with this one. In the meantime, the Democratic convention starts this week and we’ll hopefully see a road map to what the President intends to do if he gets a second term.

LULAC POLL

Our next LuLac poll will be conducted September 10th. I know I said we would be doing it every two weeks but I want to see if this week’s convention improve or solidify the last poll result which showed Governor Romney ahead of President Obama. That poll was undertaken before the GOP convention. I’d like a post two party convention poll to see where LuLac readers think this race might be headed.
